Dear colleague,

We are pleased to invite you to participate in the international workshop "Sperm Whales and Ecosystems: Past, Present and Future" to be held in conjunction with the 17th Biennial Conference on the Biology of Marine Mammals in Cape Town, South Africa, on November 28, 2007.

The goal is to advance our understanding of sperm whales, their role in their marine ecosystems, and their population dynamics in the context of anthropogenic impacts: past, present and future. The focus is to link sperm whale researchers globally and to share progress, ideas and techniques.

The objectives of the workshop are:

• To review historical and current knowledge of sperm whales’ biology, ecology and population dynamics,
• To present new directions and techniques, particularly in relation to population biology (population structure, movement patterns), trophic ecology and sociality (social structure, social signals),
• To identify knowledge gaps that require attention and identify future conservation and management issues, e.g. in relation to whaling, habitat disruptions and climate change.

Duration: 1-day workshop

Format: To foster constructive discussion and promote the exchange of ideas, the format will alternate short plenary talks and open discussion. The day will comprise of three working sessions, provisionally entitled trophic ecology, populations, and sociality. Each session will be two hours long, comprising of one or more short talks on the selected topic followed by open discussion.

Cost: We are looking into options for external funding (including the possibility of subsidizing some travel costs) but at present the workshop has to be self-financing, meaning there will be a $50.00 charge per person ($30.00 for students) to cover the cost of room hire, audiovisual, refreshments, etc.

TALLLER INTERNACIONAL DE CACHALOTES
Cachalotes y Ecosistemas: Pasado, Presente y Futuro

Estimado Colega,

Tenemos el placer de invitarte a participar al taller internacional "Cachalotes y Ecosistemas: Pasado, Presente y Futuro", el cual se llevara a cabo en conjunto con la 17ª Conferencia Bienal sobre la Biología de Mamíferos Marinos en Sudáfrica, el 28 de noviembre del 2007.

La meta principal es avanzar nuestro conocimiento sobre los cachalotes, su papel en el ecosistema marino, y su dinámica de poblaciones en el contexto de impactos antropogénicos del pasado, presente y futuro. Asimismo, compartir y discutir ideas, técnicas y nuevos estudios sobre esta especie entre científicos a nivel internacional.

Los objetivos del taller son:

• Examinar el conocimiento histórico y actual sobre la biología, ecología y dinámica de poblaciones del cachalote.
• Presentar nuevas direcciones y técnicas, en particular sobre la biología de poblaciones (estructura poblacional y patrones de movimiento), ecología trófica y organización social (estructura y señales sociales).
• Identificar problemas o ausencia de conocimiento que requieran atención para identificar futuros problemas de conservación y manejo; por ejemplo, en relación a cacerías, daño de hábitat, y cambio climático.

Duración del taller: Un día

Formato Para promover discusiones constructivas e intercambio de ideas, el taller consistirá de un día, en cual se alternara entre presentaciones completas y breves, y discusiones abiertas. El taller consistirá de tres sesiones, las cuales están tituladas provisionalmente: ecología trófica, poblaciones y organización social.

Costo Actualmente, estamos buscando opciones de financiamiento externo (incluyendo la posibilidad de apoyar el costo del viaje para algunos conferencistas). Por el momento, el taller tiene un costo de $50.00 (dólares americanos) por persona y $30.00 para estudiantes para cubrir el costo de renta del auditorio, audiovisuales, café, etc.
