The SMM and conference sponsors encourage student participation in the 17th Biennial conference by offering grants to defray travel costs and a reduced registration fee for SMM Student Members. During the conference, students are eligible to win awards for outstanding presentations in various categories. The Student Affairs Workshop has become an integral part of the conference programme. At this workshop, students can participate in round-table discussions with professionals in various disciplines and network with other students. We encourage all students to take advantage of these opportunities.

Student Abstract Mentoring Service

As the SMM becomes an increasingly international society, more of our members and conference participants do not speak English as a first language. Given that our conferences are conducted in English, we want to ensure that language is not a barrier to participation, particularly during abstract preparation by students, whose abstracts are scored as one component of the student award process.

Thus, for the first time, we are offering a mentoring service to students who do not speak English as a first language and who are submitting an abstract for either an oral or poster presentation at the 17th Biennial. This service will provide free editorial assistance with grammar and composition to abstracts that have already been prepared in English. The idea of the mentoring service is to make sure that the original ideas of the student author are clearly expressed in English. This service will not translate abstracts into English or offer guidance with scientific content.

If you are a student, English is not your first language, and you are interested in the student abstract mentoring service, send an MS Word file with the English draft of your abstract in the proper format for submission to Amanda Bradford as soon as possible, but no later than 17 May 2007. Your abstract will be returned to you with suggested revisions as quickly as possible, with all abstracts to be returned by 24 May. We encourage you not to wait until 17 May to send in your abstract. Abstracts received after 17 May will not be edited. Please note that you are responsible for the on-line submission of your abstract.
