Weather

Cape Town’s climate is generally characterized as Mediterranean, with warm dry summers and cold wet winters. November/December corresponds to early summer, with average daily maximum and minimum temperatures of 24-25 oC (75-77 oF) and 13-15 oC (55-59 oF) respectively. Humidity is low, and the average monthly rainfall at this time of year is only 14-17 mm (0.5-0.7 ins), with 5-6 days a month when rainfall might equal or exceed 1 mm in 24 hours. But expect strong wind: this is the time of year for southeasters, which can blow for several days at a time and easily reach wind speeds of 40-50 km/hr (25-30 mph) in the city centre.

Note: Although you are expected to spend most of your time attending the Conference (!), when you are outdoors please note that the sun is much fiercer than you might expect if you come from northern climes, and the UV Index regularly reaches dangerous levels in Cape Town in summer. You are therefore strongly advised to bring (and apply) sun block with as high a factor as possible, as well as covering up exposed parts of the body as much as possible.
